Patented Futures x MODEM

In 2021, Anastasiia Fedorova collaborated with Amsterdam-based office for design and innovation Modem on a research paper titled Patented Futures which explored the potential of wearable tech and the blueprint for our future lifestyles according to Silicon Valley. ⁣⁣

In Patented Futures, Modem and Studio Bjørn Ibsen reimagined nondescript patent filings from tech corporations as forward-looking designs — mapping the vast promises and implications of tomorrow’s wearable technologies.⁣⁣ The text which ties the research together looks into the cultural landscape which has shaped the idea of wearable tech (15th anniversary of the iPhone, Ghost in the Shell, Google Glass, Airpods and Donna Haraway) and interrogates the idea of the future in relation to our bodies – the warm, soft, resilient yet perishable constructions. We love to dream of the future which our skin will never touch and eyes will never see – but in reality, how are we going to navigate entering the increasingly digitalised dimensions of tomorrow and the metaverse?
