Russian Queer Revolution at Vogue Fabrics Dalston
1 September - 10 October 2020
PRESS highlights:
Russian Queer Revolution is a platform dedicated to celebrating Russia’s LGBTQI+ creatives. In September 2020, it joined forces with The Outsiders Gallery at VFD to host an installation that created a collective portrait of the queer Russian community leading a cultural rebellion — and an ode to their courage and openness.
At the centre of Russian Queer Revolution’s installation at VFD is
a collection of portraits sourced from Russia’s LGBTQI+ community.
It is a mixture of self-portraits, collaborative works, fragments from editorials and various creative projects. Every person depicted here (alongside thousands who we were not able to fit inside the physical space of The Outsiders Gallery) contributes to the rise of the new Russian queer culture. They all help to define what it means to be Russian and queer in 2020. They are creating a new visual language and a unique identity. They prove that the words “Russian” and “queer” are not mutually exclusive. They carry themselves with self-determination and pride and believe in the power of community.
